Other than fast-food what kinds for franchises are available and
    how much do they cost?

    By Gordon Dupries

There are literally thousands of registered franchises available today in 85 different industries. You can find just about anything you want in a franchise except high tech or manufacturing businesses because it would take to long to train a franchisee.

Franchises can be divided into 5 general categories and they are: Food, Auto, Retail, Business to Business and Personalized Services. The least expensive are generally service businesses, many of which are home based. These businesses are in the Business to Business or Personalized Services categories. They usually have a total investment requirement of between $20,000 - 50,000 and are very popular. The Most expensive are in retail, food and auto because of the substantial lease, furniture, fixtures and inventory requirements. They can range from as low as $150,000 to $500,00.

Franchising is constantly evolving with older franchisors changing to meet market demand or technology and new concepts that take advantage of market trends in the economy such as more kids, an aging population downsizing corporations and home-based business. Chances are there's something out there for you if you know where to look and do you homework.
